Your First Holotropic Breathing Session: What You Need to Know

Holotropic Breathin is a powerful technique designed to release trauma, heal and integrate your past experiences. Originating from the work of Dr. Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina, it aims to take you on a deep inward journey. Your deep, fast, breathing together with evocative music takes you to a “non-ordinary state of consciousness”. In this state,  you could experience intense emotions and body sensations. Any psychodynamic material which is ready to be released, surfaces in the session for you to fully feel and let go of. This process helps integrate body, mind, and spirit, leading to profound personal insights, emotional healing and spiritual connection. Here’s a detailed guide to prepare you for your first session.

What is Holotropic Breathing?

  • Definition: Holos = wholeness and Trepein = moving towards. Holotropic Breathwork is a therapeutic practice to heal. It involves accelerated deep breathing  and evocative music specifically curated. It is facilitated in a supportive environment to induce a non-ordinary state of consciousness.
  • Origins: It has been developed by Dr. Stanislav Grof, a psychiatrist with a deep interest in altered states of consciousness, and his late wife Christina Grof. Dr. Grof began working with psychedelics when LSD was first synthesized up until it was banned and became an illegal substance. He and his wife then developed a combination of breath and music that would achieve the effect of a deep journey into the psyche.
  • Purpose: It aims to promote self-exploration and emotional release. Breathwork brings about healing and deepens spiritual connection.

What to Expect During the Session

  • Pre-Session Briefing: The facilitator will conduct an opening session and provide an overview of the process –  what to expect, and instructions on the breathing technique. This briefing helps you to prepare you mentally for the experience and ask any questions you have.
  • Setting and Atmosphere: The sessions are typically conducted in a safe, comfortable space, often with dim lighting, mattresses and pillows to lie on. Eye shades are provided or you could carry one of your own.
  • Breathing Technique: You’ll be guided to breathe rapidly and deeply,  through the nose or mouth as is comfortable for you, to induce an altered state of consciousness. This hyperventilation triggers various psychological and physiological responses.
  • Music: A key element of Holotropic Breathwork, the music played is specifically chosen to evoke emotional responses and support the breathing process. It typically starts with compelling rhythms, transitions into evocative melodies and then gradually becomes more calming and soothing.
  • Sitter and Breather Roles: Participants usually work in pairs. One person is the “breather,” who engages in the breathing process, while the other is the “sitter,” providing support and ensuring the breather’s safety. This is a supportive process unique to Holotropic Breathwork engendering community.

During the Breathwork

  • Entering a Non-ordinary State: As you continue the rapid breathing, you may experience a range of sensations, emotions, and visions. These can include tingling in the body, emotional release, and visual narratives.
  • Emotional and Physical Responses: It’s common to encounter intense emotions, memories, or physical sensations. These experiences can be cathartic and healing. They allow you to process unresolved issues.
  • Facilitator Support: Facilitators are present to guide you, keep you safe, offer reassurance, and help you navigate through challenging experiences. They may use verbal cues, gentle touch (with your consent), or body work  techniques to assist you with your experiences.

Post-Session Integration

  • Mandala drawing: After the breathing session, you’ll have the opportunity to make a Mandala drawing depicting your  experience.
  • Group Sharing: Sharing your experience and what you have drawn with others in the group brings you a sense of community and support. Facilitators contract with participants to listen with their hearts – no asking questions or offering explanations or comparisons.
  • Continued Reflection: It’s important to allow time for integration in the days following your breathwork session. Reflect on any insights or emotions that arose and consider how they relate to your life.

Tips for a Successful Session

  • Stay Open and Non-Judgmental: Come into the session with an open mind and without expectations. Allow yourself to fully engage in the process without judging or analyzing your experiences during or after the session.
  • Focus on Your Breath: Concentrate on breathing as fast and deep as you are able to. If you find yourself judging your thoughts, just increase your efforts to breathe deeper and faster. The breath eventually shuts down your meddlesome thoughts and takes you into meaningful experiences.
  • Allow Emotions to Flow: Allow yourself to trust the process and let any emotions or sensations  surface without resistance. This is an intrinsic part of the healing journey.
  • Communicate Needs: If at any point you feel overwhelmed or need assistance, communicate with your facilitator or sitter. They are there to support you fully.

Potential Benefits

  • Emotional Release: Most  participants experience a significant release of stored emotions, leading to a sense of relief and clarity.
  • Increased Self-Awareness: The altered state of consciousness can provide deep insights into your subconscious mind, revealing patterns, beliefs, and emotions that have been influencing your life.
  • Spiritual Connection: Some individuals report profound spiritual experiences, feeling a sense of unity with the universe or even connecting with a higher power.
  • Enhanced Creativity: The process can unlock your creative potential, offering new perspectives and inspiration for artistic expression.

Possible Challenges

  • Intense Emotions: Encountering strong emotions or memories can be challenging if you are self conscious.  Remember that this is part of the healing process and everyone is here to heal. Give yourself permission to go through and respond to your emotions as naturally as possible.
  • Physical Discomfort: Some physical sensations like tingling, muscle tension, or dizziness may occur. These are usually temporary and can be managed with the help of the facilitator.
  • Integration Difficulties: Processing and integrating the insights gained from the session can take time. It’s important to be patient with yourself and seek additional support if you require.
